VOLUNTEERING FOR HOSPICE

Have you ever thought about becoming a hospice volunteer?  Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience.

Most hospice agencies are seeking volunteers. Volunteers can help in a variety of ways, from providing direct patient care in the home to providing help in the office to the support staff.  Patient care volunteers provide vital support to families by enhancing the quality of life for patients and reducing the family’s caregiving burdens.  Every hospice volunteer offers a special kindness that only a volunteer can bring to patients at the end of life. Volunteers are the heart of the hospice and always welcome.

Hospice volunteers receive orientation and training from the hospice to help them fulfill the volunteer role that they have chosen.

Volunteers will receive educational training on the philosophy of hospice care, grief and loss, safety, infection control, privacy, an overview of the services provided by the hospice agency, as well as the physical, emotional, social and spiritual concerns that people encounter at the end of life. Volunteers receive training in effective communication skills that is helpful when speaking with patients and their families during this special time in the life process.
